The Traditional Mass is Changing the Face of the French Clergy

Old Mass a Breeding Ground for Vocations
(Paris) The face of the French clergy is changing at a fast pace, and that in two respects. The number of priestly vocations is at the lowest level. Simultaneously, a change from the new to the old rite is taking place.

Decline in Diocesan Priestly Vocations by 84 Percent

In 1966, the year after the end of the Second Vatican Council, there were 4,536 diocesan seminarians in France.  Within ten years the number fell, under the influence of Pope Paul VI.and in the Post-Conciliar period to 1297 in 1975. A  decline of almost three-quarters could be described as a fast collapse.  Under Pope John Paul II,  the slump was halted 20 years later, in 1996, the number was still 1,103 seminarians at approximately the same level.
The last part of his pontificate was followed by a new nosedive: In 2005, the number of seminarians was 784. That was only 17 percent when compared to 1966, or in other words, a decrease of 83 percent.
2011 has reached the lowest point since the French Revolution. Only 710 seminarians were preparing for the secular priesthood. Parallel to this decline, the proportion of seminarians of the tradition is growing.

Proportion of Priests of Tradition Climbs

An assessment of the priestly ordinations in the last five years illustrates this development. It consists of the numbers of those  ordained  in the Ordinary form compared to those  consecrated in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. The list refers only to secular priests. Keeping in mind the priests of the Ecclesia Dei  communities and the Society of St. Pius X.
2010: 86 percent of the ordinations in the Ordinary, 14 percent in the Extraordinary
Form, 2011: 86 percent of the ordinations in the Ordinary, 14 percent in the Extraordinary Form
2012: 83 percent of the ordinations in the Ordinary, 17 percent in the Extraordinary Form
2013: 88 percent of ordinations in the Ordinary, 12 percent in the Extraordinary Form
2014: 82 percent of the ordinations in the Ordinary, 18 percent in the Extraordinary Form
2015: 77 percent of the ordinations in the Ordinary, 23 percent in the extraordinary form

The Drama of the Decline and the Hope for a New future

The juxtaposition of consecration years in absolute terms shows the development and the drama:
2010: 96 ordinations in the Ordinary form, 16 in the Extraordinary
Form, 2011: 109 ordinations in the ordinary form, 18 in the Extraordinary Form
2012: 97 ordinations in the ordinary form, 20 in the Extraordinary Form
2013: 92 ordinations in the ordinary form , 12 in the Extraordinary Form
2014: 88 ordinations in the ordinary form, 18 in the Extraordinary Form
2015: 68 ordinations in the ordinary form, 20 in the extraordinary form
Over the past six years, 545 diocesan priests were ordained for the new rite in France and 107 for the Traditional Rite.  Not included in the list are religious priests. It also doesn't include those ordained in the traditional rite, like the Benedictines of Le Barroux or the Frenchmen who were ordained for the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. Also not considered is the phenomenon spreading in France of biritually trained priests, or the phenomenon of young diocesan priests of the new rite, who are also interested in the traditional rite and tradition.

Communities and Parishes of the Traditional Rite are a Breeding Ground for Vocations

The personal parishes and communities of tradition have proven to be the most fertile ground for priestly vocations.Compared to their small number and size,  their share of vocations is enormous. The traditional  blogger Cordialiter published a conversation with a young Italian who encountered the traditional form of the Roman Rite in Austria and now lives with his family in France. The traditional community to which he belongs in France is 25 years old.  During this time 17 priestly vocations have emerged from it. "The majority have joined French orders of the tradition, the Benedictines of Le Barroux, Fontgombault, the Canons Regular of Lagrasse, the Servi Jesu et Mariae etc."

Animus Delendi Against the Franciscans of the Immaculate Continues -- Obsessive Micromanaging by Bergoglian Bureaucracy

(Rome) The battle against the  Franciscans of the Immaculata continues. Hardly had Pope Francis mounted the throne of Peter, than the opponents of the traditional rite in the Order felt themselves strong enough, with his agreement, to place the once thriving men's branch of the order under a provisional administration.  The women's branch "only" received an apostolic delegate as an overseer, but was still drawn in sympathy with the men's Order because of its close spiritual and institutional connectedness. With a confidential decree of 19. October 2015, the Roman Congregation for Religious reinforced its resolve to proceed further against the men's and women's branches of the Order. In his decree Pope Francis is obliging the women's order to avoid a "special vow" or "solemn promise." What this involves can be read herein.

The New Decree

"Because of credible information about a private vow (or promise) of special obedience, which is reserved to some male and female religious to the founder, which has been placed above the general vows of obedience owed to the superior, has prompted this dicastry to bring this problem to the attention of the Holy Father, who has given a special mandate to deal specifically with this problem.

Therefore, the Congregation for the Institute of Consecrated Life and for the Societies of Apostolic Life in enforcing this mandate for the good of the souls of all members of the Franciscans of the Immaculata, and all eventually bound to these institutions, by private vows (or promises) of a special nature to founders or foundresses.

In consequence it will be necessary that in future this vow or promise in future is not practiced either in its current or any future form.

With that this annuls any document, should such exist,  in its value, such that it involves in any way the vow (or promise) named here.

It is the obligation of responsible authority in both institutes to make these stipulations known in a measured and discrete way to all members belonging currently to the institutes so that they can know how they are to respond if any have been placed under such a vow.

Superiors will be instructed by the Dicastry about the times and modalities for the introduction of this decree.
Released against anything to the contrary, from the Vatican, on 19th of October 2015.

The Accompanying Music by  Corriere della Sera

Dekret der Ordenskongregation vom 19. Oktober 2015
Decree From the Congregation of Religious on  vom 19. Oktober 2015

The desired musical accompaniment by the Corriere della Sera

Decree of the Congregation of the Order of 19 October 2015
Decree of the Congregation of the Order of 19 October 2015
The Corriere della Sera gave on  a backgroundn report Thursday for   for the unusual decree. It  took great pains  to make the desired background music in support of the Decree. The Order is made by blending diverse elements under general suspicion. But telling signs can be seen Interspersed between.
The article refers back to a Franciscan  of the Immaculate, who wanted neither to be named  or photographed. He had stated:  without giving any reasons, that there are new efforts around the deposed Founder  Fr Stefano Maria Manelli and the Vatican in 2013,  to establish a new  Old Rite Order. "They do not want to acknowledge the Modern",  the anonymous brother  who is against these efforts, allegedly told Corriere della SeraThe special vow (or promise) was linked to these aspirations for a new foundation and concerns those men and women religious, who have remained faithful to the Founder.

Aspirations for a New Old Rite Establishment

The Decree by the Congregation of Religious which was in turn adopted with papal approval, says at the outset that there were "credible" reports. The decree itself reveals, however, that the Vatican has adopted it on the basis of conjecture, without having any concrete evidence. The decree thus sounds like a new shot across the bow, which clarifies that the religious congregation remains determined to disrupt  order from recognition and to subject it to re-education.  Anyway, nothing should be remain of  the actual charisma of the Order.
The fact is that there are, since the Autumn of 2013, efforts of monks and nuns to found a new religious in which the true charism lives. That charism of fidelity to tradition and the rediscovery of the traditional rite, which had led the Order to its heyday and was shattered by the raging, appointed in 2013 and now deceased Apostolic Commissar, the Capuchin Fidenzio Volpi.  So far, however, nothing is known about a "special vow."

Congregation of Religious Unwilling to Allow Reestablishment

The Congregation appointed a new Commissar last June with  Salesians Sabino Ardito, and there was hope that he would lead the Order with a calmer hand. However, the Congregation of Religious does not seem willing to grant such a rest. Above all, it seems to want to prevent the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate from carrying out a new religious foundation. Commissar Volpi had warned  Italian Bishops during the General Assembly of the Italian Bishops' Conference not to take Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate in their dioceses.
As early as autumn 2013. dozens brothers had applied to the Congregation of Religious to be released from their religious vows. The canonically compliant departure from  the altered Order should have given them the opportunity to ask for incardination in dioceses and free them up for the path to reestablishment of an Order. The Congregation has refused until today, however, such a dispensation. Cardinal Braz de Aviz and Pope Francis do not want the Order of Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate 2, since the Order of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate 1 have placed under provisional control and broken.
Thus, the brothers are forced by the Congregation to remain in the Order, although this is no longer the same Oder since the provisional administration than the one which they were originally committed to.  Should they leave without a dispensation of the Order, which have a number of well done, this puts them canonically in the wrong.  Each Bishop, or superior of another order, and especially by the Vatican could go against them in the field, since they are not in a canonically regular position. In short their lives would be  on end of a  rope indefinitely. It's a situation that brings brothers and sisters into a fitful moral dilemma. Above all, one does not change an order like a shirt.

What is at stake in the matter: A brief review

The ordeal of  Father Manelli's order, who was ousted from the Order until the summer of 2013, so continues. Reminder: The Order of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate was created after the Second Vatican Council. While other orders over abruptly "modernized", Father Manelli went the opposite way and wanted to return to the roots of the Minorite Order, to which he belonged at the time. He joined an increasing number of young men and women, so in 1990 a new foundation was necessary for religious revival of the Order of Friars Minor of St. Francis of Assisi.
Under Pope Benedict XVI.   the young discovered, with the blessing of numerous vocations,  the traditional rite. The priests concelebrated in for reasons of pastoral care in both forms of the Roman Rite. Internally the Order underwent the change from the new rite to the traditional rite. The result was an even more rapid growth of the Order, which would then set up a number of new monasteries and take over  pastoral care in parishes and sanctuaries.
The Order did not belong, because of its development, to the old ritual Ecclesia Dei -communities but was under the Congregation of Religious like all new rite communities.  That made it an anomaly that was before 2013, an example to all th other new rite orders.
Thus arose also a violent resistance within the Order. The resistance of a small internal minority, who would not  tolerate the traditional rite. For the same reason there was also resistance from among other church circles who believed they recognized a hazard in the Order. The Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate had a thriving community, and were viewed enviously by the other orders. Above all, it seemed to be the living proof that the often prostrate  nature of religious orders can be revived even in Europe through the stern austerity, tradition and the traditional rite. The Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate were on the way under Pope Benedict XVI. to becoming a potential model for other orders. It was an idea that came not with undivided joy.

With the papal election of 2013, the problems started

Under Pope Benedict XVI. no one dared openly to oppose the Order. The German Pope had returned the traditional rite with the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum to the universal Church. In implementation of this Motu Proprio, the Order had returned to the traditional rite. The German pope was especially closely connected with the Franciscans of the Immaculate, too closely, so that the envious and chief opponents of the traditional rite would never have dared to lay hands.
With the unexpected resignation of Benedict and the election of Pope Francis, the situation had changed radically in one fell swoop. The Argentinian Pope was soon repeatedly recognized for his dislike of the representatives of tradition and also that he retained the traditional rite as  a passing "fad." Now it happened in quick succession.Citing and in cooperation with the small band of five brothers who complained to the Congregation of Religious, Father Manelli and the entire Order leadership were deposed and replaced by an Apostolic Commissar, the said Father Volpi, and he also no friend of the traditional rite. The Order now lacked the protection afforded by the Ecclesia Dei 's own communities.

The Imposition of the "new Mercy"

To this day, the Vatican has offered no reasons for this serious interference. Only unofficial hints by Commissioner Volpi and the Curial Archbishop Carballo, who has been appointed by Pope Francis secretary of the Congregation for Religious could show that it comes to an ideological struggle against tradition and the traditional rite. This is suggested, since celebration of the old rite was banned for all  priests  by decree of the provisional administration. In open opposition to the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum every priest of the Order had to individually apply for a special permission to celebrate the old rite again. It was a demonstrative act of reducing and downgrading of the traditional rite, with which the Order members  were   shown what is now required under the new conditions in the Vatican and what is not.
Pope Francis withdrew the possibility from the astonished friars the right to appeal against the decree in opposition to the Congregation of Religious. The case would have ultimately landed before the judgment seat of Cardinal Raymond Burke, the then Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, an incorruptible Canon Law expert and declared friend of the traditional rite. This should be avoided. Basically, as well as the  aforementioned rejection of dispensation, shows that Order members should be compelled for re-education.
Pope Francis has dedicated his pontificate to the theme of mercy. Yet he has showed the Franciscans of the Immaculate anything but mercy.

Pastor on Broadway Leads Souls to Immemorial Mass

Edit: this appeared in September and is being showcased now on the European blogs. It's nice to bring it up in case you missed it, how the Immemorial Mass of All Ages is leading to a rekindling of people's faith in New York:

I – A PARISH IN RENEWAL

The church of the Holy Innocents was erected as a parish in 1866 in south Manhattan, at the heart of what was then the red-light district of New York and has since become the Garment District. It has long been considered as the actors' parish because of its proximity to Broadway and its theaters. Attendance declined in that business and entertainment district where there were few residences, and the parish was recently under threat of being closed down during a diocesan restructuring plan-until Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, acknowledged the parish's value as a spiritual oasis in the area. The parish offered the extraordinary form of the Roman rite since 2009 in addition to the ordinary form. Indeed, Sunday Mass attendance has tripled since then. As a result, the Cardinal not only confirmed the status of Holy Innocents but also assigned a new pastor there, even though there hadn't been one since 2013.

The main attraction of this 1870 neo-Gothic church is its altar fresco of the Crucifixion by Costantino Brumidi, the artist responsible for the Washington Capitol rotunda. This fresco recovered all of its luster in 2013 after Fr. Kallumady, pastor 2007-2013, restored it. It was that priest, who was ordained in his home country of India in 1973, who reintroduced the traditional liturgy to the parish. He explained in the diocesan paper:
"It is a commuter church and I was looking for a supporting community on Sundays. We now have anywhere near 100 people attending Sunday Latin Mass. They are very active and supportive of the parish and that’s what I was looking for. They come from all over: Long Island, New Jersey, some from as far as 80 miles away. They are all welcomed here. And so this is a parish with a difference."

After Fr. Kallumady's departure the parish was administered by Fr. Rutler, the famous New York preacher and evangelist, who knows the traditional liturgy and kept up its renewal until Fr. Villa's nomination last winter. Fr. Villa had served in the U.S. Navy prior to his entrance to St. Joseph Seminary. During his seminary years he served the homeless and alcoholics in New York's Bowery as an apostolic assignment. Fr. Villa served in St. Eugene's parish for twenty-two years in Yonkers, the fourth largest city in New York State north of the Bronx. He introduced the extraordinary form of the Roman rite there on 14 September 2007, the very day Benedict XVI's motu proprio took effect. A leader of men at the service of the salvation of souls, Fr. Villa showed the way in his very first sermon at Holy Innocents: Consecration to the Sacred-Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary; devotion to the Blessed Sacrament; and confession. Indeed Fr. Villa is convinced that before bearing witness to Christ through words, one has first to live in His presence, just as the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph did.

SSPX Clergy Invited to Help in Ravenna Archdiocese by Archbishop

(Rome) As auxiliary bishop of  Reggio Emilia-Guastalla (2006-2012)  Msgr. Lorenzo Ghizzoni was a bitter opponent of those faithful who sought to celebrate the Holy Mass in the Immemorial Rite of All Ages.   It was an opposition which undermined the Motu Proprio  Summorum Pontificum.

As Archbishop of Ravenna-Cervia,  Msgr. Ghizzoni is allowing, on the first and second Sundays in October, a priest of the Society of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

The celebration will take place in the parish of Saint Maria del Torrione and follows from the formation of a stable group of  the faithful desiring the Traditional Rite, who've asked the Archbishop for it.

The celebrant was Father  Enrico Doria of the priory of  “Madonna di Loreto” in Rimini.

The online edition of the paper „Prima Pagina Reggio“ described it: “It seems that Pope Francis' recognition of the legitimacy of the sacrament of reconciliation given by lefebvrian priests has also quickly led to a new course in the Italian Episcopate.  This, what was unthinkable yesterday, (the opening of parish property to Lefevrians, who had previously been regarded as lepers), are today not only tolerated but welcome.  Those of the faithful community close to Econe will celebrate, but also all other faithful of the Catholic Church, we are convinced, will make use of this."

Msgr. Lorenzo Ghizzoni was named in Dezember 2012 by Pope Benedict  XVI. as Archbishop of Ravennaand enthroned in January 2013.

Where the Apostle Peter Celebrated His First Holy Mass in Europe

San Piero a Grado: Where Petrus Celebrated
His First Holy Mass in Europe
(Rome) in the Basilica of San Piero a Grado is the place where, according to tradition,   the apostle Peter celebrated his first Holy Mass in Europe in  year 44.  The first Basilica consecrated by the Vicar of Jesus Christ is not Peter's Basilica  located  in the better-known Adriatic town of Grado, but in a small unknown village in the city of Pisa in Tuscany.
Grado is located one kilometer from the River Arno southwest of Pisa. At that time   the main branch of the Arno flowed here into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Today, the site is located just six kilometers from the sea. In the port of Grado, according to the oldest local tradition, is where St. Peter landed, as he wanted to get on a ship from Palestine to Rome. That was in the year 44 AD. In that year, therefore, the celebration of his first sacrifice of the mass in Europe took place.

Early Christian Church

There are proven traces of churches from early Christian times. The oldest excavated church dates from the 4th century. It stands on the older foundations of the old port facility. The second church was in built in the 6th / 7th century, probably after a fire.
The present basilica was built in the 10th century and was rebuilt and expanded in the next 200 years. The church has the shape of a three-aisled basilica except with the particularity that   east and west facades end with apses. The reason for this is likely to be the severe damage to the original west facade, perhaps by the Arno's flood. Because of the destruction,  the nave was shortened by twelve meters. The entrance has been on the north side since then.

Ancient column and marble top -  the improvised altar, on which Petrus celebrated

Altar of St. Peter (center)
The church was,  so the tradition, built exactly on the spot where the Prince of the Apostles had celebrated the first Mass on an improvised altar. While the hitherto most important archaeological excavations of an ancient Roman pillar 1955-1965 were discovered with a marble slab on it. This was around the altar of the early Christian basilica. The column and slab are kept in the Basilica.
In the sanctuary is a ciborium located above the altar since the 14th century.   During the excavations it was discovered that the ciborium is exactly above the altar of the early Christian  and Lombard churches.
The excavations offer  by the obvious significance of the altar location and at the same time, the unusual altar, is evidence for the authenticity of Petrus-Tradition. This is also the unusual for a small village, given the size of the church building, which necessitated the  use of the valuable materials, underline the importance of the cult place.

Pope portraits - Older than Those in St. Paul Outside the Walls

The Popes of the first Christian millennium: older than the portraits in St. Paul Outside the Walls
In 1300, on the occasion of the first Holy Year proclaimed   by Pope Bonfatius VIII.,  the powerful Lombard family of Gaetani gave the painter Deodato Orlandi from Lucca a commission to decorate the appropriate areas of the entire central nave with a fresco cycle.
The extensive work consists of three superimposed image series and has recently been restored. In the bottom row there are the portraits of all the popes of the first Christian millennium, the apostle Peter to John XVII., who reigned in the year 1003.  Pope portraits can also be found in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome with the difference that those of  of San Piero a Grado are older.
The middle  frescoes depict the life of the Apostle Peter, including his voyage to Italy; plus scenes from the lives of other saints, including the Apostle Paul and Saint Pope Silvester I. The top row of images show the heavenly city of Jerusalem from whose windows peer angels and saints.

Prima in Sardinia Celebrated in Immemorial Mass of All Ages -- Seminary of Cuglieri Still Stands Empty

Cagliari:  Basilica Santa Croce
(Cagliari) Archbishop Arrigo Miglio of Cagliari and Primate of Sardinia and Corsica celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the traditional form of the Roman Rite. The former Pontifical Seminary of Cuglieri (Diocese of Alghero) is still empty.
Gaudium vestrum impleatur,  was the motto of the Archbishop cited by the traditional site Messa in Latino  from the Gospel of John. In chapter 15, verse 11, the Lord Jesus Christ is quoted as saying: "This I say to you, that my joy may be in you and that your joy might be full."
Last Sunday, the 200th birthday of Don Bosco, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Cagliari, Arrigo Miglio visited the community of traditional faithful who have gathered, since 2008, in the Basilica di Santa Croce, nearby the cathedral. The Archbishop even celebrated on this occasion  the Immemorial Mass. "A bold step of great importance for the Church", says Messa in Latino .
Msgr. Miglio was named in February 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. as  Archbishop of Cagliari. Previously he had celebrated the Immemorial Rite as Bishop of Ivrea (1999-2012)  and prepared the ground in his diocese for successor Bishop Edoardo Aldo Cerrato, former Superior General of the Oratorians, a great friend of the traditional rite.
Last April, a new priest of the Archdiocese of Cagliari celebrated his first Mass in the Traditional Rite with great  sympathy from the people. For the first time in 50 years, the Immemorial was said at  the Basilica of Our Lady of Bonaria, the biggest Marian shrine of Sardinia. "It's a symbolic event, because this sanctuary received its name from  Buenos Aires, the Argentine capital and hometown of Pope Francis," says Messa in Latino . The response from the diocesan  leadership and clergy  showed that rejection must be by no means a "self-evident" reflex, although a local daily newspaper at that time roared "scandal."
The vicar general of the archdiocese participated in the first Mass [Primiz], now   Archbishop Miglio himself is celebrating in the Immemorial.  "A clear and unequivocal signal to the priests, especially for those who still take "concerns" to heart: The Holy Mass ritus antiquior has full citizenship in the Church," said Messa in Latino .

Bishops Prevented Seminary of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest

Cuglieri and the former seminary
In Sardinia, it may also be different: in 2012 Old Rite Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest (ICRSS) wanted to purchase a former Papal Seminary of Cuglieri, vacant since 1970 in the autonomous region of Sardinia.  The ICRSS has experienced such a large influx of new entrants, that the seminary in Tuscany suffers from lack of space. The Sardinian church, which was in 1976 pleased to sell the plant to the region, and had since then no longer cared, was overreactive in one fell swoop. The Bishop of Alghero (Church province of Sassari) and the adjacent Archbishop of Oristano expressed perplexity and frustration that the Sardinian government sold the building complex to the Institute. The then prime minister of Sardinia, Ugo Cappellacci, was the first "excited" to show the interest in the traditional institution, suddenly said that the offer of the bishops, "better corresponded to local interests."
The "offer" the bishops of Alghero and Oristano was to make the former a seminary an "inter-religious and intercultural center". On January 18, 2014, the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and  Caritas signed a vaguely formulated "agreement protocol" on the future use of the building complex. The former Papal Seminary should, instead of an old ritual seminary, "focus on the integration of different peoples [...] as a symbol that integration is possible", as the press service of the state government reported.

Building complex is still empty

Nothing has happened since then. The Region has assigned the right of use for the symbolic value of one euro to the municipality Cuglieri. This space  is used for occasional events. The majority of the buildings are inaccessible.  Church and cloister can be visited on special occasions. The church is only accessible in certain areas because of the danger of falling ceiling tiles.
The establishment of an old rite seminary was able to be prevented by some bishops, including actively the local bishop. Since then, the interest of the same bishops in the building complex has receded,  which is still in a deep sleep.

Pontifical High Mass at Basilica with Cardinal Burke Cancelled

Update: it looks like Cardinal Burke is going to be in the itinerary of some kind of Neo-Knights Templar Conference, leading a Pilgrimmage to the Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine in La Crosse, on Monday the 21st of September. Again, thanks to reader for the information.

http://www.guadalupeshrine.org/about/founder

http://www.eohsjnorthern.com/annual-meeting-2015

Edit: Cardinal Burke, who has a lot of time on his hands after being fired by the Pope from his position at the Apostolic Signatura was still in a position to do some a lot of good by saying the Immemorial Mass of All Ages in a historic event at one of the most evil parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.   The event was to take place at 10:00 in the morning on Saturday, September 19th at St. Mary's Basilica in Minneapolis. After making some inquiries we have no reason why the Holy Mass was cancelled, except that perhaps the rector and the Devil himself don't approve of it.

In addition to the possible disapproval on the part of the  questionable leadership at the parish, things are especially bad recently in the Archdiocese as a whole, since one of the Cardinal's confreres, the faithful Archbishop John Nienstedt, has been hounded from his position as Archbishop owing to the all-too-familiar media blitzkrieg and a host of disloyal elements among his clergy and even his own chancery.

Perhaps the reason is the evil reputation of the Basilica itself?

When they're not prostituting themselves to the zeitgeist, promoting deviancy at various fairs and events, surely leading souls into Hell, they're probably the most singular anti-Catholic presence in the Archdiocese as a locus of dissent and disobedience.

The place needs to be reconsecrated anyway, in our humble opinion.

The Immemorial Mass was to be celebrated in the context of an event sponsored by the Knights of Malta of the Holy Sepulcher meeting, which will hold some events at the Basilica, which is somewhat understandable since Cardinal Burke is the Patron of the Order of Malta another equestrian order. [Hence our initial confusion that these people were Knights of St. John (Malta).]   What doesn't make sense is why an equestrian society of Catholic gentlemen would associated themselves with the evil St. John's Bible and the Faux-Benedictines of Collegeville. One of the events in the bulletin so kindly provided by a reader shows:

"Artist as Preacher" - Presentation of St. John's Bible -
Rev. Eric Hollas, OSB, KHS

Father Hollas' biography reads as follows from Collegeville's website:

Fr. Eric Hollas, OSB - Deputy to the President for Advancement in the Office of Institutional Advancement at Saint John's University.  Fr. Eric received his BA degree in history from Princeton in 1971, completed seminary studies at Saint John's School of Theology·Seminary and received his PhD in medieval studies from Yale.  Fr. Eric is a member of the Medieval Academy of America.  Fr. Eric is also a member of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre and chaplain in the Western Association of the Order of Malta.  Since 1980, Fr. Eric has been a member of the faculty of the School of Theology • Seminary and Department of Theology at Saint John's University.  From 1993 to 2002, he was Executive Director of the Hill Monastic Manuscript Library at Saint John's University.  Among his many activities, Fr. Eric was instrumental in initiating The Saint John's Bible and has spoken on that project at venues throughout the United States.

One of the principal problems with the bible, apart from the false claims surrounding it, and its price tag, is the calligrapher, who is himself an atheist.

Cardinal Burke to Celebrate Immemorial Mass of All Ages at Dissident Basilica

Edit: this is positive news, but perhaps not the way one would hope for, but certainly unexpected.

Cardinal Burke is going to celebrate the Immemorial Mass of All Ages at one of the worst dissident aberrosexual parishes in North America.

Will he have to reconsecrate due to the sacrilege of the Basilica Block Party, and the presence of artwork by an advocate for sexual deviancy? Stay tuned.

Date: September 19, 2015

Chur: Father Martin Ramm as First Vicar for the "Old Rite" in German Zone

IVth Summorum Pontificum Conference -- Cardinal Müller: "Tradition as the Fundamental Principle of Catholic Theology"

(Rome) From 13 -14  June, 2015 the IVth Conference on the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum was held, which  Pope Benedict XVI. had adopted for the Universal Church in 2007.  The meeting was held at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, better known as the Angelicum.
Like the previous sessions there was also a motto for this year, "A treasure for the whole Church", which finds its complement  in the often-mentioned sentence: "A hope for the whole Church". The first three meetings were held in 2008, 2009 and 2011. It was supposed to take place biannually. The resignation of Benedict XVI. and the election of Pope Francis  persuaded  many of the members that the fourth edition of the conference would be postponed till 2015.
It was organized in turn by Giovani e Tradizione and 2008 in the wake of the first meeting launched in 2008, Amicizia Sacerdotale Summorum Pontificum .
The meeting was opened with a Holy Mass in the traditional rite, which was celebrated by Cardinal Raymond Burke in the Church of SS. Domenico e Sisto. The conference work was led by the Dominican Vincenzo Nuara, member of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei and the priest moderator of the association, Amicizia Sacerdotale Summorum Pontificum. Father Nuara declared the meeting objective was thus to promote a positive approach to the liturgical question, by making increasingly known the richness of the traditional Mass, which Benedict XVI. had restored to the Church.

An interested audience from Italy and abroad listened to presentations and discussions to deepen their liturgical understanding. The focus of the conference in 2015 was the need for a conscious rediscovery of the deeper reasons for the celebration of the traditional rite.

First Mass in the Immemorial Mass -- Joyful Celebration for the Church of Sardinia

First Mass in the traditional rite at the Marian Shrine of Bonaria in Sardinia
(Cagliari) This past Sunday, 12 April was for the Archdiocese of Cagliari on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sardinia, a memorable historic day.
On the afternoon of  White Sunday, known since 2000 as  Mercy Sunday,   the new priest of the Archdiocese, Don Michele Piras, celebrated his Primiz in the majestic Basilica of Our Lady of Bonaria, the patroness  of the island, his first Mass. And he did so in the Immemorial Mass of the Roman Rite.
On the morning of the day before, Michele Piras was consecrated a priest by Mons. Arrigo Miglio, Archbishop of Cagliari and Primate of Sardinia and Corsica, in the cathedral church. Those present were Cardinal Luigi De Magistris, Emeritus Archbishop Pier Giuliano Tiddia of Oristano and the Bishop Emeritus Antioco Piseddu of Lanusei and about a hundred priests who had come to this happy day.

Shrine of Bonaria - After 50 years, first Sacrifice of the Mass in the Traditional Rite

For 50 years, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was no longer celebrated at the Marian Shrine of Bonaria in the Immemorial Rite. "A truly exceptional joy in many ways," says the traditional website Messa in Latino (MiL).
Sardinia was until recently, a particularly barren ground for the traditional rite. But the ordination of Don Michele Piras now made visible a fruit that had remained hidden. This was particularly evident in the participation of numerous Sardinian clergy for the First Mass. The liturgical service deliberately involved exclusively Sardinian clergy. The response of the diocesan leadership  and clergy show that rejection is not  a "self-evident" reflex in any way.

Sardinian Clergy is Actively Involved

Strong presence of Sardinian clergy (especially the younger)
Don Gianluca Pretta, pastor of Gesico (Cagliari) would have assisted, but had to cancel due to personal reasons at the last minute and was replaced by Father William Barker, Minister of the Personal Parish of  SS. Trinità dei Pellegrini in Rome, procurator of the Fraternity of St. Peter, the Holy See and official of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei;  Don Giorgio Domenico Lenzi, pastor of Sant'Antioco (Cagliari), incardinated in the Institute of the Good Shepherd, served as Deacon; as subdeacon, Don Angelo Cardia, pastor of Soleminis (Cagliari) and Master of Ceremonies, Don  Cristiano Piseddu, priest of the Archdiocese of Cagliari, who is currently completing his studies in Rome.
The first Mass' sermon was by Don Fabrizio Pibiri, pastor of Donori (Cagliari), who presented with both powerful and beautiful words on the greatness of the Catholic priesthood and pointed to how young priest  assumes the responsibility by his ordained ministry.
Also, numerous clergy appeared for the first Mass. In the first place was  Cardinal Luigi de Magistris, who comes from the archdiocese itself; the Vicar General of the Archdiocese, Canon Giovanni Ligas and many pastors and priests of the archdiocese, the younger clergy was particularly represented, who had come also from other dioceses of the island. Likewise, a number of seminarians of the General Seminary of the island.

Our Lady of Bonaria - Mercedarians and Founding of Buenos Aires

The Shrine of Bonaria has been under the care of the Mercedians for almost 700 years. The Order was founded in 1218 by St. Raymond of Penyafort,  in the first century as a knightly order and from 1317 as a purely religious order,  which put its main concern for the liberation of the Christians abducted and enslaved by Muslims. If there was not enough money for the ransom, the brothers offered themselves as replacements.  With the discovery of the Americas   the Mercedarians, who are among the mendicant orders since 1670, put their apostolate in the service  of slaves in the New World, which they supplemented by the proselytizing of the Indians. Today the Order continues its founding, especially in the prison ministry.
Sardinia from 1324 belonged to the kingdom of Aragon and for 400  years was connected with Spain. For this reason, the Mercedarians also came from there to the island. In 1534 the Roman-German Emperor Charles V, King of Spain conceived an expedition by Pedro de Mendoza in the New World. Mendoza, knew of Sardinia and the Shrine of Bonaria, and called upon her for a happy crossing and the discovery of the mouth of the Rio de la Plata, which was founded there by him, and called at first Santa María del Buen Aire  from which the present capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires comes.
The religious superiors and pastor of Bonaria, Father Giovannino Tolu, welcomed the new priest at the entrance of the Basilica and after he had put on his priestly stole,  accompanied him to his first sacrifice on the altar.

Large Participation of Faithful People

The polyphonic chants from the time of Palestrina were sung by the archbishop's Cathedral Choir under the direction of Canon Gianfranco Deiosso,  a Choral Schola chanted the Gregorian settings under the direction of Don Nicola Ruggeri, pastor of Senorbi (Cagliari).
The young acolytes came from the parish of Santa Giusta Gesico, who were noticeable by their natural seriousness and the ease with which they moved in great dignity in the Old Rite.
The largest church in the island was crowded at this festive occasion by a believing people, who had streamed in from the Archdiocese, but also from other dioceses to gratefully praise God for the grace to have been given a new priest, to receive the blessing of priest at his first Mass and to kiss the sacred chrism after yet fragrant, consecrated hands of the newly ordained.
Don Piras was born in Sant'Elia district of Cagliari. After the visit of the Archbishop minor seminary, he entered the seminary of his native diocese and completed his studies with a degree in Rome. His first pastoral care center will be as vicar of a parish of the Archdiocese in the country.

Abbot Primate of Klosterneuberg's Affront Against the Immemorial Mass and Cardinal Burke

Cardinal Burke Celebrating Mass of
All Ages in St. Peter's Last Saturday
(Vienna) The Votive Mass in the Traditional Rite with Cardinal Raymond Burke announced for November 5th, in the parish church of St. Leopold in Vienna Danube field-Floridsdorf was canceled.
Cardinal Burke will, as advertised,  celebrate a Pontifical Mass in the Old Rite on November 4th, for the Memorial of Saint Charles Borromeo in the Church of St. Charles. The Immemorial Mass also announced for his stay in Vienna, the  Votive Mass of the Apostles Peter and Paul, however, was canceled (see report  5:11 .: Cardinal Burke celebrated in Vienna St. Leopold votive Mass in the Old Rite).

Rejection of the Traditional Rite and Aftermath of the Synod of Bishops?

Reasons for the rejection are not known, but they could have something to do  with the traditional Rite and aftermath of the Synod of Bishops on the family. The parish of St. Leopold Donaufeld is incorporated to the Augustinian Canons of Klosterneuburg. The Klosterneuburger Provost, Bernhard Backovsky is cited, who is, as is well known,  the current parish administrator and choir master of the Stift St. Leopold, forbade the celebration.
Bernhard Backovsky was elected in 1995 as  the 66th Provost and 17th  Lateran Abbot of the Stift. In 2002 he was elected Abbot General of the Austrian Augustinian Congregation of Canons. Since 2010 he has also been Abbot Primate of all Augustinian canons in the world.

What about "Open Discussion" and the "Full Peace of the Church" for the Usus Antiquus?

The prohibition by Abbot Primate Backovsky must be construed as an affront of rare hardness toward to the traditional Rite and one of the leading representatives of the Church. An unfriendly manner behind which are visible the veiled   fractures within the Catholic Church in Austria. This demonstrates the inability obey, and to accept the traditional Rite and  respect the opinions of others. Cardinal Burke and Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn stood at opposite position in the Synod of Bishops. A  ban on the Mass in the Old Rite is harsh paternalism to others, first of all, the celebrant, but also the faithful who want this.
The unpleasant incident raises questions about just how valid is this "open discussion", which Pope Francis advocated several times for the Synod of Bishops. And how is confirms the hope that Emeritus Benedict XVI. gave in his greeting message last Saturday: "I am very happy that the Usus antiquus now lives in full peace in the Church, even among the young, also supported and celebrated by great cardinals. Another Diocesan TLM Unceremoniously Being Shut Down in UK?

Edit: one of the problems with getting involved with a Summorum Pontificum parish is that after spending thousands of dollars for restoration, building traditional sodalities, maybe establishing a school and attracting people who come to depend on it for their spiritual lives, the thing can be suddenly yanked, for no other reason than someone at the chancery doesn't think there's enough interest, or that the Latin Mass doesn't fit the locale (as was the case at a parish in California that was moved because it "disturbed" the tourists.)

Perhaps it will, as one concerned Catholic opines, "have its altar tossed in a dust bin and be fit out with minarets."  This is what is happening presently on the other side of the pond.

Moving with the times might be a virtue for some, but it's not exactly a sign of affection either. Here's the news from LMS, who hopes this is incorrect, but we expect it's not:
That's what Fr John Zuhlsdorf says: it will end by the end of Septemeber. According to my sources, which are probably the same as his, this is true. It was announced from the pulpit yesterday by the new Parish Priest, Fr Steven Fisher. It was his second Sunday in the parish.
If it isn't true, no one will be more pleased to put the record straight than I.
Archbishop Peter Smith of Southwark did something very unusual in moving Fr Tim Finigan from the parish of Our Lady of the Rosary at Blackfen, to a parish in Margate. The usual thing is that, knowing that there was a long-established group attending the Traditional Mass in the parish, Archbishop Smith appointed a new Parish Priest who was able, and professed himself willing, to carry this on.
It is a tragedy that this hasn't worked. Fr Fisher has decided, for reasons which I'll leave to him to explain, that, having said he would continue to say the EF, he won't after all.
