Pope Francis and Cardinal Caffara Embrace -- Are the Dubia off the Table? -- Things Are Not So Simple

(Rome) Pope Francis visited on Sunday the city of Carpi in Emilia. The diocese in the Po Valley was affected by a major earthquake in 2012. Media, and some Catholic circles were able to read a lot in the coffee grounds. Carlo Cardinal Caffara also took part in the pope's visit as emeritus Metropolitan of the adjoining Church Province of Bologna. Caffarra is one of the four notable Cardinals, who gave the Pope Dubia (doubts) on the controversial Apostolic Letter Amoris laetitia.

The five questions were not answered by the Pope until today and lie as a dark shadow over the pontificate.

Since December 2015 Matteo Maria Zuppi has been archbishop of Bologna. He belongs to the community of Sant'Egidio. As the Pope visited the episcopal church yesterday, just a few kilometers from Bologna, it was obvious that both Archbishop Zuppi and Cardinal Caffarra attended the meeting. "Both represent very different positions within the Church," said the Corriere della Sera  on April 1.

The fact that Cardinal Caffarra was present and greeted by the Pope caused some speculation. At lunch in the Carpi priestly eminary, the Cardinal, on account of his rank, sat even on the Pope's right, while on the left a 95-year-old priest, the oldest member of the adjoining clergy, was allowed to sit.

But whoever thinks, as many have done, that a salutation is enough, and all is well, are mistaken. The world is not as simple as it appears to some. Some examples:

Medjugorje and the Rosary "from the Pope"

The Vatican is prepared not to recognize the supernatural nature of the Medjugorje phenomenon. This has for a long time been fixed, but one has been looking for the right way for years to make it as easy as possible for the faithful.

In September 2015 Marija Pavlovic, a "seeress" of Medjugorje, by the way a very lovable person, was referred to media reports that Rome would not recognize the "apparitions" and "messages" of Medjugorje, for she had only received a rosary from Pope Francis in the previous week. A priest had brought it to her, who had participated in a meeting with the pope and received the Rosary from the Pope. He had asked the pope whether he could bring to Marija Pavlovic. The Pope had agreed.

Things can be so simple or at least appear so. The so very important question of the supernatural nature of the apparitions is "clarified" because the pope agrees that a rosary should be brought to a seeress.

The greeting for Bergoglio critic Archbishop Aguer

Greetings from Pope Francis to Archbishop Hector Aguer

A recent example took place only a month ago. Pope Francis,l sent Archbishop Hector Aguer of La Plata a congratulatory note on the 25th anniversary of his ordination. Such attentions are self-evident practices in the Church. They are independent of the person's public appearance. Archbishop Aguer was the opponent of Jorge Mario Bergoglio in the Argentine episcopate. Both were, at the same time, archbishops of Buenos Aires, but represented different positions, comparable to the relationship between Archbishop Zuppi and Cardinal Caffarra in Bologna. Both were metropolitans: Aguer of La Plata, Bergoglio of Buenos Aires and thus Primates of Argentina. Between the two archbishops, the sparks flew again and again in the Episcopal Conference. With the papal election of Francis, it was finally decided which of them would prevail. Francis then made a tabula rasa among his former Argentine opponents. Archbishop Aguer is still in office, but has become rather lonely in the Episcopal Conference.

A congratulation from the pope and all is good? An office of the Vatican prepares such congratulations, which are then signed by the Pope. It's a courtesy which ultimately tells nothing about the relationship between the Pope and the Archbishop.

The same applies to the embrace of Pope Francis and Cardinal Caffarra. This greeting is customary among cardinals and bishops. A polite greeting does not mean that "everything is good" and the Dubia are also off the table.

The world is not that simple.

However, the example shows how annoying the Dubia is and how great the burden is because Pope Francis does not want to answer the questions asked.

The Archbishop of Bologna Puts the Christ Child in Rainbow Flag

Christ Child in Rainbow Flag
(Rome) Matteo Maria Zuppi of the Community of Sant'Egidio was appointed Archbishop of Bologna in late October 2015 by Pope Francis as the successor to Cardinal Carlo Caffarra. He has been in office for 13 months. He is the opposite of his predecessor, one of the signatories of the Dubia (doubts) to Pope Francis on the controversial post-synodal Letter Amoris laetitia .
Upon taking up his position in Bologna, Msgr. Zuppi, committed himself to build mosques. The anger of the well-known Spanish Catholic columnist and blogger, Francisco Fernandez de la Cigoña, the Archbishop moved himself to do  a "stupid" gesture for Christmas.
Zuppi, together with other appointees, is reckoned, among the shepherds "with the smell of the sheep," which Pope Francis several times suggested of model shepherds.
De la Cigoña, well-known for his blunt language, described Msgr. Zuppi as "a fool who we shall soon see as a cardinal." De la Cigoña's anger was aroused by a Holy Mass celebrated by Archbishop Zuppi with the Jesus Child in a crib on a rainbow flag.
"Symbols are not meant to be playthings. The crib for the Jesus child can also not be adorned with a swastika or a communist flag or a Coca-Cola flag. It can't even be a gay flag, or the flag of a soccer club.
Perhaps in the future we will also see a Jesus child with a condom, or with the portrait of Donald Trump. With such 'original' bishops, everything is possible."
When De la Cigoña was made aware that in Italy the rainbow flag, is almost identical to the aberrosexual flag, is a symbol of the Christian peace movement, he took it into his "foolish head" and apologized to Archbishop Zuppi.
However, what de la Cigoña has written also applies to the peace movement: the crib of the Jesus child should not be draped with the flag of a peace movement.
The jury is still out on the use of a symbol that is similar to the other. There is no doubt that the aberro-movement has for the time being has carried through with the flag conflict and has usurped the rainbow, symbolizing the "covenant" with God in the Old Testament. That the Christian peace movement in Italy has  continued to use the rainbow colors, although it could be confused with the gay movement, as De la Cigoña did, gives proof that has to do with the fact that this peace movement is supported mainly by the left Catholic circles who usually have no problems with the aberrosexual flag. The potential confusion is obviously accepted.

Statement by Rota Dean "Corrected": "Francis Will Not Take Away Cardinal's Rank"

Interview of Dean of Roman Rota was "Revised"
(Madrid) Last Tuesday, 29 November,  a report by Religion Confidencial struck like a bomb - and led to a significant image problem for Pope Francis. Now a "corrected position" has appeared, with which the image problem was corrected. The criticism by the four cardinals, on the other hand, was not withdrawn.
Msgr. Pius Vito Pinto, Dean of the Roman Rota , one of the supreme courts of the Catholic Church, was took part the day before in a conference on the new marriage tribunal process in Madrid. On this occasion he gave an interview to the Spanish news site, Religion Confidencial.  He was quoted as saying that Pope Francis would strip the four cardinals Brandmüller, Burke, Caffarra and Meisner of their dignity as cardinals,  because by posting their Dubia (doubts) to the controversial post-synodal Letter Amoris laetitia, they had given "serious offense".
The words of the Rota Dean, coupled with further criticism of the four Dubia presenters was understood as threat and intimidation.

The old and the new version

Meanwhile a "correction" was made in the publication Religion Confidencial, which is more of a clarification (RC). RC said that Msgr. Pinto had answered the questions in Italian and that the translation into Spanish was "incorrect". The new title of the RC interviews is now: "Under another pope, the four cardinals who wrote him could lose their cardinalatial dignity."
First, RC had published the following reply from Msgr. Pinto:
"What church are these Cardinals defending? The Pope is faithful to the teaching of Christ. What they have done is a very serious offence which could cause the Holy Father to deny them the Cardinal's hat, as has happened in other times in the Church. "
The revised body is now:
"What church defend these cardinals? The Pope is faithful to the teaching of Christ. What they have done is a very serious offence. He continued, that Pope Francis, however, is not a pope of the past, who would take away the Cardinal's hat, as Pius XI. did with the famous French Jesuit theologian Louis Billot. 'Francis will not do that,' he said."

The tarnished image that was feared has been left behind - but criticism of the four cardinals remains

After Msgr. Pinto's statement, which was first distributed by RC, caused worldwide attention, there seems to have been a corresponding intervention to reduce the position. The original statement conveyed a very bad impression of not very "merciful" administration by Pope Francis. The image of a pontificate in which even the highest dignitaries are heavily punished just because they ask questions, could be an image shredder.
It is striking that the first version was consistently indicated as a statement by Monsignor Pinto, whereas in the revised version, the controversial passage is only indirectly reproduced. RC reported a translation error.  We are more closely acquainted with the fact that the results obtained by Mgsr. Pinto last Monday, reveals a threat posture in Rome some because active imagination went too far. Still the criticism of the four cardinals was not weakened by the "correct position".
According to Pinto, the attitude of the four cardinals is so serious that they would deserve to lose the cardinalatial dignity, but it is just their good luck that it is Pope Francis who is reacting and not "another pope."

Pope Receives Resignations of Cardinals Caffarra and Romeo -- Successors Named

Cardinal Carlo Caffarra
(Rome) Pope Francis has today accepted the Resignation of Cardinal Carlo Caffarra as Archbishop of Bologna and of Cardinal Paolo Romeo of Palermo. According to canon law both had offered the Pope their resignations with the 75th year of life. Both dignitaries stayed two years longer in office. Cardinal Romeo was on 77 years old on February 20, Cardinal Caffarra  on the 1st of June. Their successors are to be called from among the representatives of the "poor Church for the poor".

Cardinal Carlo Caffarra - distinctive shape of the European episcopate

Cardinal Caffarra had been appointed by Pope John Paul II. Archbishop of Bologna in 2004. The Cardinals from Busseto in the Emilia, was born in the same place as Giuseppe Verdi, and came from humble beginnings. Caffarra received his doctorate in canon law and moral theology. At the family Synod of 1980, whose result was Familiaris Consortio, Pope John Paul II. had appointed him as an expert on marriage and family questions. John Paul II. appointed him as the first president of the Pontifical Institute established in 1981, "John Paul II. For Studies on Marriage and Family" at the Pontifical Lateran University. He is one of the most distinctive diocesan bishops and cardinals in Europe: a fine, razor-sharp thinker with a willingness to fight.  Most recently, he raised his voice against  gender ideology and the homosexual agenda. Even last week he refused allegiance to Pope Francis, as this the Synod Fathers presented the almost unchanged working document of the Synod  from the beginning as a final document for the vote, despite more than 1,300 amendments after three Synod weeks.
The protest, including Caffarra's, was so clear that the pope had to relent and sought in the final hours before the final vote to somehow seek a compromise on a tight deadline for a majority.

Cardinal Romeo - alleged assassination plot against Benedict XVI.

Cardinal Paolo Romeo
Cardinal Romeo was appointed in 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI., the Archbishop of Palermo. Romeo comes from a wealthy and large family of Catania in Sicily. Like Cardinal Caffarra, he also received his doctorate at the Pontifical Gregorian University in canon law. He is extroverted and enthusiastic about technology with the precision thinking of a lawyer. In 1967 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See and was active until his appointment as archbishop of Palermo in the Apostolic nunciatures or the State Secretariat. In 1983 he attained the rank of Apostolic Nuncio and became titular bishop of Vulturia, a defunct diocese in the imperial province of Mauretania of the Roman Empire.
Cardinal Romeo got international notoriety momentarily because he predicted in November 2011, that Pope Benedict XVI. would die within a year. The incident became known only later. Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, who had learned of Romeo's statements during a visit to China, wrote a statement of the facts for the German Pope. For security reasons and due to its confidential nature,  the Colombian cardinal wrote on 30 December 2011 a letter in German and sent it to Benedict XVI. as Cardinal Romeo's interlocutor, "thought with horror that we are dealing with an assassination plot against the Pope," said Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos in his exposition of the facts, that it involved an "assassination plot."  To make sure that the Pope had received his letter, the Colombian cardinal sought the pope in mid-January as part of a private audience.
Vatican spokesman Lombardi denied  media reports in February 2012 as "absurd and frivolous". A year later Benedict XVI surprisingly announced his resignation from office.

The new archbishops of Bologna and Palermo

The new Archbishops (from left) Msgr. Zuppi (Bologna) and Msgr. Lorefice (Palermo)
For new archbishop of Palermo, Pope Francis has chosen the Sicilian priest Corrado Lorefice (born in 1962). Ordained priest in 1987, he was incardinated in his home diocese of Noto. Most recently  Msgr. Lorefice was parish priest of San Pietro a Modica and episcopal vicar for pastoral care in the diocese.
For new Archbishop of Bologna, Pope Francis has chosen Matteo Maria Zuppi from Rome (born in 1955). Msgr. Zuppi belongs to the Community of Sant'Egidio. He was ordained a priest in 1981 and incardinated in the diocese of Rome, he received his doctorate in Church history. From 1981-2000 he was a chaplain in Santa Maria in Trastevere. In 2000 he became the spiritual assistant as a successor of the diocesan bishop Msgr. Vincenzo Paglia to the Community of Sant'Egidio. In 2012 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. auxiliary bishop of Rome and Titular Bishop of Villanova, also a defunct diocese in the province of Mauretania Caesariensis. Msgr. Zuppi has been in the past 25 years, together with Andrea Riccardi, founder of Sant'Egidio, active in the so-called parallel diplomacy, at the official Diplomatic Service of the Holy See. In March 2014 Msgr. Zuppi also visited as the competent Bishop the traditional Roman personal parish Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini, which is supervised by the Fraternity of St. Peter and celebrated at his own request in the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite.
The local press of Sicily and Romagna speaks of a "great discontinuity". The two successors of the former archbishops have been representatives of the  "poor Church and for the poor" of Pope Francis.
Both diocese were previously linked to the dignity of Cardinal. Under Pope Francis, however, it can not be said  that the newly appointed will also be raised in the cardinal state.

Pope Names Cardinals Burke and Caffarra as Members of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints

Cardinals Burke and Caffarra
(Rome) Pope Francis appointed the Archbishop Carlo Cardinal Caffarra of Bologna and Cardinal Raymond Burke Patron of the Order of Malta last Saturday during his US visit as  members of the Congregation of Saints.
Both cardinals are considered enemies of the "New Mercy" and have come forward with a view to the upcoming Synod of Bishops on the family to speak in active  defense of Catholic marriage and morality.
Both belong to the five cardinals, who caused a sensation in the past year throughout the Church with the book "Remain in the Truth of Christ."
Cardinal Burke was recognized as the de facto spokesman in the Synod of Bishops 2014   against the proposal by Cardinal Walter Kasper, who wanted to allow so-called remarried divorcees to the sacraments. The same applies to the attempt to recognize aberrosexuality.
After the election of Pope Francis, the US Cardinal had become among the most outspoken critics of the reigning pope, who publicly voiced his  respectful and relevant opposition.

Adversary of the "Nw Mercy" and an imprecise, ambiguous language

The clash took place mainly at the "non-negotiable values" (Benedict XVI.). The Cardinal,  well-known for his precise thinking  also came into conflict with Pope Francis because of vague and ambiguous formulations.
It's an attitude that did not sit well with Pope Francis. Shortly after the conclusion of the Synod of Bishops, the Argentine Pope removed the renowned canon lawyer as prefect of the Apostolic Signatura and removed him from the Roman Curia.
Cardinal Burke will, therefore, not participate in the beginning on 4 October Synod of Bishops.
Previously, the Pope had not confirmed   Burke's membership in the Congregation for Bishops and the Congregation for Divine Worship.
The situation is different for Cardinal Caffarra. The profiled Italian shepherd enjoys the confidence of Pope Francis, so it is said in Rome. Like last year, Cardinal Francis had  named Caffara personally to synod. Caffarra is one of the weightiest voices against  gender ideology.
For Cardinal Caffarra this is the first appointment to the General Assembly of a Roman Congregation. Previously, he was already a member of the Pontifical Family Council.
Congregation is not the same as Congregation. Each has its tasks, which have some weighty influence on the management of world church than others. The reassignment from one congregation to another, as in the case of Cardinal Burke, can therefore be seen as diesempowering, while maintaining integration.

Cardinal Caffara: “Without Truth There Can be no Love” -- Of the Theft and Emptying of the Word “Love"

(Bologna) The Archbishop of Bologna, Cardinal Carlo Caffarra, held a Lectio Magistralis that offered more than expected. The Cardinal is known for his clear words and his unabridged proclamation of Catholic doctrine. For this reason, he is already cornered repeatedly by zeitgeisty intellectual homo-philes. A confrontation that the Archbishop does not fear. In his most recent Lectio, the fact that Christians had “love” taken from their hands due to carelessness. The word has been filled with new content and thus robbed of its true meaning. Because love exists only in connection with truth. Without truth, there is no love.

A child needs a Father and a Mother, not “Parent 1" and “Parent 2

The Lectio Magistralis of Cardinal Caffarra was held in Bologna at the opening of the new school year for Catholic teachers. The media commentators have focused on an important passage in which the Cardinal decided against replacing the words "father" and "mother" with "parent 1" and "parent 2". An ideologically motivated circumlocution in the left-liberal war of extermination against the family.

The Lectio contained another point that was deeper and more fundamental. It is also about the debate surrounding the letter Pope Francis recently wrote to atheist Eugenio Scalfari and the left-liberal daily La Repubblica. "A Key Concept of the Christian Doctrine has Been Stolen by Modern Culture”

“You may have noticed that I have avoided using the word 'love,'" said Cardinal Caffarra. "Why is that? Because a theft has occurred. A key concept of the Christian doctrine, just 'love', has been stolen by modern culture and has become an empty concept, a kind of container in which everyone puts into it what he says. "In this way, however," said the Cardinal, "the truth of love is a hard to place today".

The statement of the Archbishop of Bologna is of great importance. The cardinal recalled that everyone, especially those who want to have a flexible truth, that love, as well as mercy, represents a very concrete reality and truth is immutable and not arbitrarily modeled plastic. To make it clearer to understand what he meant, Cardinal Caffarra quoted a passage from the encyclical Caritas in Veritate by Benedict XVI.:

"Without truth, charity degenerates into sentimentality. Love becomes an empty shell, to be filled in as you wish. That is the fatal risk facing love in a culture without truth. It falls prey to contingent subjective emotions and opinions of the individual, a word that is abused and distorted, until finally it means the opposite. “

This is Catholic doctrine, the same as Pope Francis was trying to convey in his attempt at dialogue with the atheist Scalfari. An experiment which reminded among other atheists because the truth is neither changeable nor subjective. Some passages of the Pope's letter was somewhat misleading and offered Scalfari and La Repubblica, has a decisive influence on the left-liberal media spectrum when it comes to the Vatican and Italy, the possibility of a dialectical reversal.

However, the following applies: Where the good will is not there, there will always be such distortion that God and the truth will be evaded, no matter how well a text is formulated.

"To say homo and hetero is the same thing, is to deny the obvious"

Cardinal Caffarra was the first President of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. As early as last July, he found clear words against aberro-partnerships. He then replied to statements of the Leftist mayor of Bologna. At that time the Cardinal found a fitting manner to express what many complain of in the current development: "To say that homo and hetero represent an equivalent, that it makes no difference for society and for the children, is to deny the obvious. Even if that has to be explained, then it must really be a mute cry. We have arrived at such a darkening of reason, that one thinks it is the laws that establish the truth of things.” And that is truly a tragedy.

The ideas expanded upon in his Lectio Magistralis, the Cardinal took his ideas back from July and it's really sad that such things that are self-evident today must be partly recalled to an audience that acts as if it had a clue, but does not know the reality of things, not even the most basic realities of human existence: "gay marriage," said the cardinal, "is unable to meet the requirement for begetting new human life." Nevertheless, he added, different countries have recognized homosexual relationships in their laws and "these granted the right to adopt or for artificial insemination." So we are already in the midst of trying separate the loving union of man and woman and procreation from each other. It has become indifferent as to whether the new life is begotten or produced. The topic of surrogacy is still disparaged, but it is already in the room.

Love Decoupled From The Truth “Leads Us to The Abyss"

What besides, said Cardinal Caffarra, “then that the human person comes into the world?" The mistake is to think that the connection between man and woman is an empty concept to be decided by social consensus, which is the destruction of the most basic human social network: the genealogy of man. “This proposed path that makes a concept deflated of truth, the concept of love ,and fills it with subjective feelings, leads us to the abyss in which the biological dimension as a constitutive element of genealogy disappears.”

Holy Mass of Pius V in the Cathedral of Bologna -- Icon of Saint Luke

(Bologna) Every year in the northern Italian city of Bologna, the miraculous image of Our Lady is  seen all over the city  from near and far during a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of St. Luke in the city's cathedral. The statue dates from  the middle of the 12th Century. Since that time, this devotion is located at  Colle della Guardia, on which now stands the great pilgrimage church.
The local tradition attributes the miraculous image to the evangelist Luke, whose remains are located in the nearby city of Padua in part. According to tradition, a pilgrim had called Theocles get the icon in Constantinople by the monks of St. Sophia, to bring them up to the Colle della Guardia. In Italy he learned that this hill is located near Bologna. He handed over the icon to the local bishop, who entrusted it to two sisters who lived in a small monastery on the hill.  In 1732 an imposing sanctuary was built on the hill.
Marie icon of St. Luke in BolognaThe miraculous image corresponds to the representation of Maria Hodegetria, the Mother of God with Baby Jesus is shown as Guide. The Byzantine original was attributed to the evangelist Luke, however, was lost in 1453 when the city was conquered by the Turks. There are numerous other images of Mary modeled after the original,  the Roman miraculous image Salus Populi Romani in the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, in front of which  Pope Francis has already prayed twice, as the Black Madonna of Czestochowa and the no less famous Mother of God of Kazan, but also the miraculous image of Bologna.
The veneration of the image intensified from 1433. As a long-lasting rainfall endangered the harvest, people determined to bring the picture of grace in the city. On the day of the transfer, the rain stopped. Since then, the transfer takes place annually. In the 17th/18th Centuries there was a 3.7 kilometer long arcade to allow for its dry passage.
The stay  in St. Peter Cathedral of the Archdiocese runs from the eve of the Sixth Sunday after Easter (the fifth Sunday according to the old Liturgical Calendar) to the Solemnity of the Ascension which is celebrated in Italy on the following Sunday.
The week in which the miraculous image is located in the Cathedral, is always rich in liturgical events. Since 2011, one of the Holy Sacrifices of the Mass has been celebrated in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. It is celebrated by the priests Cardinal Archbishop Carlo Caffarra has entrusted with the care of the Mass location according to Summorum Pontificum.
